Verifying gmail SMTP with putty

I don't like Microsoft outlook, but everybody has it... one common error I have seen is that during configuration the SMTP server does not get connected.

Once you have reviewed the server connection details you should verify if your computer can connect to the smtp service on the server side. I use gmail as an example due is normal to see Microsoft outlook used to check gmail accounts.

By checking this you'll know if everything is OK on your computer.

I use Putty to make this test.

A. Fill Host name and Port box as shown and also set raw as connection type.

Hit the enter key

B.If the start of the screen says 220 means the smtp server is ready to start. In other words everything is fine.

If you get Unable to connect or Connection refused or some other thing that indicate some kind of error you need to check the following:

A. Your antivirus. Disable it for a few minutes while you test.

B. Your firewall (Windows or Antivirus). Create some rules to allow communication thru this port.

C. Your modem. (Get the assistance from your ISP)

D. Your ISP. (Get the assistance from your ISP)
